last legs

2007-12-23 12:56 a.m.

to say that i am exhausted would be a gross, gross understatement.

i dragged myself to church at 10am this morning after having slept at 3am yesterday (was busy photoshopping the butterfly picture) for the youth rally rehearsals.

i started off carrying a backpack containing my truckload of costumes (4 items in church 3 items in xen) but eventually the backpack became a frontpack because amazingly BOTH zippers broke and i had to carry the bag in front of me to prevent my things from falling out.

the youth rally itself was...ok i suppose.

i would post pictures but i have no idea where my handphone is and am not in a mood to go find it.

considering we only had that tiny stretch of carpet as a stage (reminded me of cuba libre) with the audience seated on the floor just one step away from being kicked, i would say the fact that there were no casualties speaks volumes about how careful we were.

(or how adapt the audience was at ducking and dodging.)

after that i rushed to xenbar (why am i always doing that?) for the hip hop practice and to try out the baggy black pants (which were apparently not meant to be worn as hipsters) before rushing back to church, AGAIN, all in the space of one hour.

i sprinted the entire distance between bugis junction and church (with my frontpack and plastic bags flapping) which, for those of you who know, is a considerable distance.

probably burned off all the carbs from that dinner i didnt eat.

when i got back to church i was dishevelled, sweaty, and so out of breath i couldnt even tell lynette where i'd been, and they hadnt even started yet.

but i shouldnt have worried. what was supposed to end at 11 ended at 7.30, which shocked even me.

i was expecting it to end at 9 or so, but 7.30?!

not that i was complaining.

because i didnt feel like making the long walk to bugis junction again i decided to cab over to xenbar, since i felt rather rich with $6.60 in my pocket.

how much could it cost, after all, to travel such a short distance?

when the taxi had made 1/3 of the journey the meter read $8.15.

apparently there were some EXTRA SURCHARGES i had not realized.

appalled, i got off immediately. poor old taxi driver had to make do with $6.60 for the journey.

which was how i found myself stranded in the middle of nowhere with not a single cent, ezlink card busted and with no means of borrowing money from anyone.

so i did the only thing possible and asked for 60cents and directions to the nearest bus stop from the first kindly-looking stranger i met.

oh, the embarrassment.

but i lived through it.

feeling rescued i made my way to the bus stop, only to discover that not one of the buses went to chinatown.

by then i had somehow or other reached bugis junction and so decided to make my way to the mrt station. on the way i pleaded a $1 out of another stranger feeling sure that $1.60 would be enough for a one-time ticket to chinatown.

obviously, with the way my luck was going, it was not.

and so it was with a heavy heart and much-thickened skin i extracted another $1 from a third stranger.

altogether, $2.60.

finally, i made my way to chinatown.

for the record, i am officially sick of this poor-penniless-me phase of my life.

what would have taken half an hour on a normal day took an hour and 5 minutes today.

when i finally reached xenbar i saw AMANDA and SOK EE which really lifted my mood because it meant there were SIX of us again, like last year.

though it was more like a st johnses reunion because 5 out of the 6 ppl were from st johns.

the poor english drama club member didnt have that long history.

and and my makeup was thickened to chinese opera level by dionne.

it was so drama i was freaked out by myself.

but walking around xenbar looking like a scary goth wasnt as weird as walking around church with now-you-see-it-now-you-dont makeup.

probably because at church, just clamping your lashes is considered extreme but at xenbar, not having fake eyelashes would set you apart from the others.

at about 9.15 joy, macarthur and peizhe arrived (apparently luke and peiwei had wanted to go too, too bad they didnt in the end) and had a rather, um, rough introduction to xenbar.

not my fault.

at 9.30 the performance started. hip hop was the third item (and the only one joy and co stayed for) and um i think it was a bit of a mess, if the bruises on my arms and legs where i hit other ppl are any indication.

a looong time after that dionne and i did our duo item. it would have been an even looonger time had our item not been pushed to the eighth or ninth from the thirteenth.

i might still be there now, otherwise.

in the end we skipped penguin shine altogether because it was too late and we (sorry, THEY) had to catch the last mrt back.

i simply cabbed back, whoohoo. and this time i managed to get home without further incident, thank goodness.

oh dear SCO performance tmr.
