olympio

i love the olympics.

yes, i surprise myself!

im not exactly one who watches sports.

i consider supersports and espn to be excellent substitues for twiddling my thumbs.

and the golf channel just pisses me off because its what im forced to watch whenever my father hogs the tv.

but i actually found myself inexplicably, unexplainably drawn towards watching the olympics!

ive watched gymnastics, swimming, basketball, handball, equestrian show jumping and weightlifting so far.

yes, WEIGHTLIFTING.

it was strangely riveting.

my entire family sat the whole 56kg men's heats and finals out with the seriousness of one observing a worm wriggling out of a hole for the first time.

after about 10 minutes of watching, you'd have thought we were weightlifting pros by listening to our comments.

'look at this guy! naah he wont make it, he just doesnt have the right attitude.'

'this one's left arm is stronger, he'd lift it tilted to one side for sure!'

'his jerk is all wrong and he buckled! didnt straighten his arms.'

as time went by the comments got more and more personal.

'pfft look at this one's nose, its quite special eh? *snicker snicker*'

'you know why he couldnt lift it? cuz he stuck out his tongue too late!'

'there he goes with the blinking thing again, and then AAAHHH with the mouth! so that's where the power comes from yea.'

for once, i KIND OF understood what its like to be a sports fan, to actually take sports as more than just a pesky thing that takes up valuable tv time.

and even to take it kind of PERSONALLY.

i must say the whole concept of the olympics is rather cool!

its quite overwhelming to think that at this very moment everyone on earth is watching this group of people push themselves to the limit to win.

(that is, if the live telecasts are truly live, of course.)

but its like this one interconnecting event which joins us all together.

yes i know that sounds so cheesy.

but i was properly astonished today when i walked into the aj canteen and found a substantiable crowd gathered around the usually completely-ignored school tvs watching the men's swimming heats!

and at the mugger-spot behind the library, random corridors, and at the foyer; basically wherever there was a tv.

even the non-sports enthusiastics (e.g moi) were strangely drawn in by it.

its where all the ACTION is right now, where all the big shots of the world are gathered.

oh what i wouldnt give to be in beijing right now.

yes i know im just one of those who 'chou re nao'.

but look me in the eye and tell me you dont want to be there right now!

(i think jade seah as the commentator for 'today in beijing' totally ruins it though.)

well well i shall no longer bore you with my gushing now, tata.
